Then you shall know the truth and the truth will set you free

John 8:32 “Then you shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.” There’s another way I see this verse aside from the “truth” being about God’s word as I mentioned in my previous post. The word “know” in the original Greek language also means to recognize or perceive. When you look at the word truth in the original Greek language, alétheia, it also means reality.

I found out the hard way that there was a truth in my life that I did not recognize. There was a reality in my past I did not perceive. The truth/reality that I did not know was that I projected my father issues on God the Father which created anger in my heart towards God. This culminated in me leaving the faith for several years and going into a period of self-destructive behavior in the early 1980’s. I didn’t know why I was acting in such a self-destructive way until later when God showed me the truth – the reality. God revealed to me that I was wounded in my heart related to growing up with dysfunctional father figures. This was a reality, a truth, I did not know, and, not being in touch with the reality of my past had me in bondage.

God helped me know/recognize this truth which provided me an opportunity to embrace and reconcile my past. Reconciling my past helped me as a husband, father, and follower of the Lord Jesus. This reconciliation expanded my ability to love. And love is the most important value as stated God’s message.

I Corinthians 13:13 says “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.”

May God’s wonderful truth set us all free in every way.
